Eric Bayer is a forward for the Brooklyn Bruisers NHL team, currently rehabbing a knee injury. Since he's "on vacation" for the summer, his billionaire brother Max asks him to help out with security for Alex Engels. Alex is the CEO of a cable & technology company, and she's pregnant with her abusive ex-boyfriend's child.

Alex & Eric were friends when they were young kids. While Eric is providing security during Alex's trip to Hawaii for a big tech conference, they find they still have that friendship with a side of light & fun competitiveness. They're also very attracted to the adult version of the kids they used to be.

Alex has zero plans to bring a partner into her life. All she wants it to be successful and respected at her business, as well as being a more present parent to the baby she's expecting. As she and Eric get closer, he is starting to see a future that he had never visualized before.

Eric is really sweet - he falls in love with Alex, and he is not at all put off by her pregnancy - neither the fact that it's another man's baby, nor all of the changes to Alex's body. Alex is smart and capable, but she's always fighting the attitudes of the older men at the company who don't think she deserves her position. She never gives up and never lets those attitudes affect how good she is at her job, so I love her fighter personality.

There is some corporate espionage going on, and Alex always seems to be on the brink of danger. Only part of the mystery gets solved by the end of the book.

But Eric's brother Max and their father have "The Company" which seems to be about security, personal protection, tech development, and more - so who knows what might happen in the 2nd book?
