In many ways this book was truly excellent, given the genre. It has everything you want in a historical romance novel, especially in the first half. I especially appreciate how Lisa Kleypas consistently gives us good, solid family characters, and manages to create real tension in the story that is fully character-driven. This book benefits from being third in a series; readers who have read the first two will have more depth of appreciation for the character of Pandora.
The main flaw in this book is that there's a big missed opportunity for character development with the character of Gabriel. He starts off feeling regretful that he won't get a "proper" wife who will understand how to be a duchess, which seems reasonable given his position. But his transitions of perspective, first when he decides he must have Pandora, and later when he has to deal with the emotional impact of her being stabbed, just come a little too easily.
