Snotgirl, Vol. 1: Green Hair Don't Care by Bryan Lee O'Malley, Leslie Hung

5.0

FINALLY, an excellent reintroduction to the world of graphic novels and comic books. I missed it so much, and am so happy I decided to give it another go. Especially now that I have a great comic shop to go to again. (I was missing a good one for a while there in my Cheyenne life, I was spoiled in AZ)

I loved this. The art alone is enough for me to buy the rest of the volumes. After looking at a few reviews I’m surprised people didn’t enjoy it as much as I did. The main character, Lottie, is incredibly unlikable. But I feel like people missed the point? The entire volume is satire, and of the best kind. She was meant to be that way, and that’s what makes this so impressive. O’Malley is capable of some great feats of contemporary fantasy (Scott Pilgrim anyone?) and this was no exception!

25 year old fashion blogger Lottie Person is perfect on screen. With 2 million followers and a gorgeous body, her own fashion line and other famous “friends” she seems to have it all. But behind the screen Lottie is incredibly insecure, has terrible allergies, her friends don’t care about her, her boyfriend of 5 years dumps her for a younger replica, and she deals with harsh mental illness.

Oh, and she accidentally kills someone? Maybe? Or two? That part is really weird, and not so clear. But that’s what made me want to read more. There’s that element of mystery, is it illusions from her pills? Is it real? There isn’t a clear plot direction yet, but I feel like it works for this GN.

It’s funny as heck too. She’s relatable and hyperbolic in her feelings and actions- Which is great as someone in the millennial generation. I just thought it was genius. I’ll for sure pick up the next ones.
