The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber

5.0

Just screamed my way through the last 30 pages. How is this even better than the first?

I’m obsessed with the settings and characters, I love the outfits, and the fairy-tale tropes are so SO fun. Curses, fates, magical stones. Pink hair. yEs. Also, most importantly, I love the consistency of Jacks’s character? I feel like there are a lot of ‘morally grey’ love interests that are morally grey for about two chapters & then it’s very clear that it’s all an act. But he genuinely seems chaotic and is very cruel at times???Which, of course, I had to actually close the book and compose myself (thinking abt the bit with the Darling girl) bc it ENRAGED me but the character development thus felt SUbtlE and realistic alongside the construction of the ‘Fates’. I felt Evangeline‘s pain more so than other books’s protagonists, where it’s clear they just need to communicate more. This felt more complex?? V good
