The Lost Continent: Travels in Small Town America
by Bill Bryson
My dad gave me this book to read and he loves bill Bryson.
I enjoyed it overall and one of my favourite anecdotes was about eating in a restaurant ten minutes before closing time
However by about half way through the book I felt like I “got” it and was ready to stop reading
I’ve only been to a few states in America so most of the book was about places I’ve never been and relying on stereotypes that I’m not familiar with. I guess it was impressive how engaging he manages to make most of the book despite this. The humour is definitely aimed at brits because it’s so mean spirited about Americans haha.
Also final thought , this book is from the 1980s. Written as if racism is no longer around, has some really offhand grim farphobic and sexist comments. Also, he is rude about the NHS part way through for no reason!
