Bag of Bones by Stephen King
4.0

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. After reading both Desperation and the awful The Regulators, I had started to think that the derided “90s King” moniker was understandable, but Bag of Bones is a haunting, at times beautiful, and enthralling book that has much to say on the nature of grief and the power that the past can assert on the present. It’s ironic how rarely King has gone to the well of the actual ghost story. And here, he ties it his own well considered notions of concepts like the shining and the collective memories that a place or region can maintain.

The book isn’t perfect, and it drags at times, especially when he dips his toes into the 90s courtroom drama pool in the middle of the book, but the ending is satisfyingly horrifying. This book feature some truly beautiful prose, and, despite the length, it’s well worth one’s time.
