runeclausen 's review for:
Around the World in Eighty Days
by Jules Verne
Another of Vernes classics, and in the same style as the other books in his extraordinary voyages series. Is that good or bad? Well. The story is very, very, drawn-out, and it took me a long time to get through this relatively short book, because it did not hook me in very efficiently. The story has some drama, but is not really too interesting, and becomes a bit too predictable - the good Mr Fog always ends up in some troubles that threaten his time-schedule, but it is always resolved fairly quickly, and in the end it is pretty evident that he is going to make it no matter what. The twist ending where it seems that he has arrived too late, but in fact had not accounted for the day he gained on his trip around the world and so ended up winning at last minute anyways was a nice finish, but still not very unpredictable.
The characters are not presented in depth, and the mysterious enigmatic Mr Fog remains mostly unknown although we get a better idea of his inner workings as the story progresses, however only so slightly.
