Another amazing story in the Baltimore series! Once again, she was able to seamlessly integrate storylines from previous novels in a way that made sense and still allowed for the primary focus to be on this story’s main characters. In this case, those characters are Clay Maynard and Stevie Mazzetti—a PI and police officer who have been toying with a relationship for several novels now. Mostly, it’s been about Stevie getting over the grief of losing her husband and son—and that loss is what the mystery centers around in this novel.
I gotta admit—for the first part of the story, I was really irritated by Stevie and Clay getting in their own way (Especially Stevie’s dramatic “I’ll never love again” and “he deserves more,” but also Clay’s “I won’t have sex with her unless she tells me she loves me”). Once they got past that, though, everything was great. Also, the romantic subplot between Ruby and Sam is adorable and—although I know they don’t get their own story—I hope their relationship is at least explored further in other stories.
Aside from the romance and general relationships, the mystery and action were phenomenal. Kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Lots of players involved. A big twist in who one of the villains is. Another big twist with another villain. Lots of shootouts. A safe house. All the things. It’s a 20 hour audiobook and I finished it in 2 days, LOL. Just couldn’t stop and I had to know what happened next! And it did not disappoint.
