The Lost Future of Pepperharrow by Natasha Pulley

this was truly incredible. after the surprise hit that the first book was for me i was quite excited for this one and went in with rather high expectations, and this book sure met all of them!

the way everything played out so elegantly, so perfectly planned and executed, just amazing. the writing is wonderful, not too convoluted even though it had every chance at being so, and while i do love me some litfic, i think this writing style was absolutely perfect for telling this story.

that aside, these characters are just all so unbelievably lovable, so crazy and at the same time real, that i reckon i’ll be thinking about them for a while yet.

also, let me be honest: one of my favourite parts may have been the whole jealousy-misunderstandings-heartbreak plot line, because i’m deeply weak for angst (yeah yeah ik a fanfic reader. sue me.), but also because it fits so perfectly into the internalised homophobia that’s just unavoidable when you write a book about this timeline, but that wasn’t so in-your-face that it would ruin the reading experience.

i also enjoyed the fact that it’s possible to figure out the gist of things, because i think truly no book where things unravel and are mysterious and whatnot is good if the author makes it impossible for the reader to get it, because most of the time that’s just because the author thinks themselves too clever and uses plot armour. this book had none of those issues; ever since the first mention of thaniel’s tuberculosis i was suspicious, and then when keita mentioned the plan… oh, it’s glorious. everything just fit together so perfectly in the end, set up just absolutely amazingly, but there were still bits and details that managed to surprise you.

all in all i think this was the perfect ending for their story, and now i will be reading that side-story thing. so, so much love for this story.
