The Strike Out by Meghan Quinn
3.0
"You see what you want to see on the outside, but you won’t know the truth until you actually dig deeper. Don’t judge me, Harmony, and actually try to get to know me.”
Each installment of the Brentwood Boys series seems to hit and miss for me, averaging out it's rating.
Holt and Harmony are adorable, but The Strike Out could have used an infusion of more time spent with Priya (love her!) and Holt's baseball teammates (featured in previous stories; yes it's a bit confusing) to break up the high level of saccharine romance. Holt and Harmony are so in love (they never seem to be not together and the plot is heavy on physical intimacy), Holt's parents are his #relationshipgoals perfect love match, Harmony's parents are so in love ─ it just becomes too much; please turn down the Hallmark.
The bones of the story are good and thankfully it didn't follow THE SAME plot line of multiple others, but there were some bizarre character shifts, sharp left-turns in the plot with instances where I thought content was missing, manufactured drama, and the conflict hit in the wrong places.
A sweet bonus epilogue leaves you with a dopey happy feeling, and even though the story wasn't perfect for me, it was still an satisfactory diversion.
Note: I don't know why these aren't grouped as a series under Brentwood Boys on Goodreads but if you want to check out the rest of the series in order: [b:The Locker Room|44010609|The Locker Room|Meghan Quinn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1559827238l/44010609._SY75_.jpg|68423566], [b:The Dugout|52191620|The Dugout|Meghan Quinn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1567592318l/52191620._SX50_SY75_.jpg|73003395], [b:The Lineup|48905394|The Lineup|Meghan Quinn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1574300963l/48905394._SY75_.jpg|73591972], [b:The Trade|52129328|The Trade|Meghan Quinn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1583445503l/52129328._SY75_.jpg|75932427], [b:The Change Up|52992985|The Change Up|Meghan Quinn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1590582804l/52992985._SY75_.jpg|79475159], [b:The Setup|54902597|The Setup|Meghan Quinn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1598476577l/54902597._SY75_.jpg|84974191], and of course the book reviewed here [b:The Strike Out|56251929|The Strike Out|Meghan Quinn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1608728647l/56251929._SY75_.jpg|87628424]. Also, note that this series does not follow a linear timeline but flips back to Brentwood in some, while others follow characters after going pro.
