Batman, Volume 4: Zero Year - Secret City by Marguerite Bennett, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV

5.0

Year One was a masterpiece and has cast a long shadow over Batman comics, for good or ill. Because of that shadow, it seemed strange to even attempt a new origin of Batman, how could you possibly survive the comparison?

The answer here is to jump out of that shadow with a luridly colourful action adventure that is still driven by character and toys with your expectations from the first page.

Is this better than Year One? Apples and oranges, and that's the point. It stands confidently with it as one of the best Batman comics with an identity that feels separate, even complimentary.
