I was just interested enough in the ending to force myself to keep reading to get to it, and it fell flat. Who'd have thought. Sophie and the governess (name already forgotten) are the only characters I was interested in and they felt very underused. The romances felt paper thin. Henry's determination to be taken in by The Most Villainous Man In The World felt less like a consequence of his grief and desperation for changed circumstances and more to do with him having to fall in love for the story. The pace was incredibly slow throughout and then everything comes together a little too neatly. Oh well. More fool me for persevering.
