The Enigma Game
by Elizabeth Wein
Trigger warnings: war, racism, death, fire, plane crash, blood, gun violence, honestly there's a LOT of death, medical grossness, suicide, explosions, death of a friend.
I was a little hesitant going into this because Code Name Verity is honestly one of my favourite books and while I adored Rose Under Fire, I was kind of meh about The Pearl Thief. Like, I enjoyed The Pearl Thief. But it wasn't on the same level as Code Name Verity, you know?
This, to be honest, is also not on the same level as Code Name Verity, but it was FAR more compelling than The Pearl Thief. Louisa is a truly delightful protagonist. I loved getting both Jamie's perspective on things and an insight into his career as an RAF pilot, something we don't get to see in Code Name Verity. I really enjoyed the inclusion of the Enigma machine in a non-Bletchley Park setting, and I liked that Wein included a protagonist who's West Indian and dealing with regular prejudice despite being a British subject and despite having a parent die in service in the war.
Basically, this isn't as spectacular as Code Name Verity, and it's showing a very different side to the war, and I enjoyed it far more than I expected it to.
