Before She Knew Him by Peter Swanson
3.0

I don’t know exactly how to feel about this book. I definitely wanted to know how it end, and I was totally absorbed in the story as I was reading. However, I don’t ever see myself going back and rereading this book. I also have some issues with it. Of course. I’m writing my little Goodreads review so I must have some thing to say about it.

I am not much for thrillers, but I read another book by this author, and I enjoyed it so I thought I would try this one. I would say, I guess that Richard and Matthew were the same person about halfway through, but the other did a good job of making me question if that was really the case. The last couple pages before the reveal I had gone back to thinking they were two people.

I felt like the author made things too easy for Hen at the end. Her cheating husband? He gets dead. The crazy killer? She talks him out of killing her. She gets the house, no more husband, no more neighbors. Kind of a win-win for her. I didn’t think the revelation about Dustin at the end was necessary. It felt more like someone told the author he needed to make a more realistic connection between the two.

I don’t think the author did a very good job writing from a women’s perspective. if I had the energy, I would go back and find all the really bad lines, but one that sticks with me was when Hen thinks about “ the first time she had an orgasm with only intercourse.” That is something no one has ever thought ever.

Anyway. This had your typical thriller tropes, but it was well done, and I didn’t hate it. Will I be revisiting it or reading more by this author? Only time will tell.
