False Step by Victoria Helen Stone

3.0

I found this compelling, but also frustrating on several levels. I can't say I really liked any of the characters, including Veronica. Her willingness to sacrifice her happiness for her daughter's was portrayed in a way that made me feel she was more of a whiny victim than truly caring mother. She seemed to enjoy constantly thinking about her sacrifice and I think her affair was more titallating for her due to her staying married and sleeping with her husband's close friend.

It was also frustrating because it becomes apparent to the reader that Mica is high on the suspect list long before it crosses Veronica's mind. And when it does, the idiot has to let him know she knows he's the bad guy while alone in a car with him - something I really despise in fiction of all mediums. Use a little common sense, if you're trapped with a would-be murderer, don't let on you know. Maybe see if you can get away first.
