i enjoyed this little book a lot.
witnessing gregor’s family and people around him quickly seeing him only as a nuance after he changes was so heartbreaking and eyeopening. he was doing his best, working nonstop to care for his family while not living his own life and they dropped him in a second when things got hard! his sister grete seemed like the only one who’s ready to accept him in the beginning with gregor thinking about her future and making more money so he could send her to conservatory to learn, but in the end she actually becomes the one who wants to “get rid” of him. so maybe this story is not only about gregor’s physical metamorphosis but also about grete’s physical and mental metamorphosis from a young girl who just plays violin all day to a young woman who takes responsibility, has a job and ready for a husband.
the ending devastated me so much because it felt like gregor even in his dying was caring for his family, like the act itself brought too much joy to them and i saw that as a parting gift from gregor who knew the troubles and thoughts his family had after he lost his value to them.
i love when the shortest books make the biggest impact and this one was it!
