Anatomy by Dana Schwartz

2.0

safe to say it was quite a disappointment, given how gorgeous the cover was.

i’ve been looking forward to reading this book before it was even released. i don’t usually like historical fiction, but an aspiring woman in stem in the regency era is such an interesting premise. hazel sinett is a bright mind born in the wrong time and place. and yet, she defied everyone telling her what she could and could not be. i enjoyed reading about the science part of this book, the entire process of how hazel learns about anatomy and surgery. i didn’t expect the gore, but it was a gagging and delightful surprise. also gross (in a way that i now appreciate modern disinfection frameworks more). and that edward jenner cameo!

however, the plot seemed very diluted to me. hazel was already privileged as it is, but it felt like there were no repercussions or risks to her decisions. everything that’s happening just falls conveniently aligned with her goals. it was overall the lack of urgency to every event that happened. as aly said in her review, it didn’t really have a build-up towards the “great plot reveal” — and then everything was wrapped up anticlimatically.

i’m not even gonna talk about hazel and jack’s chemistry, or the lack thereof.

i’m halfway through immortality and unless there’s an incoming literary miracle i’m afraid the review is going to be just the same for the sequel.
