This is the most ridiculous book I’ve ever read, but I loved every second of it. You just have to know what you’re getting yourself into, which is an incredibly campy, very queer, YA superhero romance involving teenage boys with severe ADHD.

If you enjoy TJ Klune’s sense of humor, you will find this book to be laugh out loud funny, but for how unserious this was, it had surprising emotional depth. I may have even teared up once or twice. The romance between Nick and Seth is just so stinking sweet I can’t stand it.

If I was rating this on pure enjoyment it would be 5 stars, but I did have 2 issues with the book. Firstly, on a more serious note, The Extraordinaries is filled with pro-police sentiments that romanticize their role in society, painting cops as real life hero’s. It’s not even veiled in the slightest. If that will seriously bother you, you may not want to read this book. I can’t say I was fond of that aspect of it, but this was written prior to a lot of the major police brutality events we’ve seen and Klune has since addressed this issue. My other problem is that while I found Nick to be endearing and hilarious, his antics did eventually start to wear on me. Perhaps if this book had been 75 pages shorter, that would not have been the case, but I can only take so much insanity.

Overall, loved. Can’t wait for book 2.
