The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells

It might be the audiobook that I listened to, but the action/tension wasn't as gripping as The Time Machine. It's the most interestingly philosophical of the Wells stories that's I've read though, dealing with the ethical fallout of rejecting the abstract, which Wells himself if obviously grappling with.
He suggests through the narrator that - as opposed to Moreau's nihilism and raw, whimsical obsession - deeper meaning and salvation from these philosophical problems might be gained as we better understand the universe and its natural laws, which I find insightful/predictive (I mean, it's H.G Wells).
What it means to be human is also explored.
