Hurt Me by C.G. Blaine

Synopsis: Eden Monroe’s been dumped, and the Bahamas holiday she’s booked is going to go to waste. So why not make the most of it and go anyway? Except, Becker Donovan has the same idea. And when they both end up in the same hotel suite and a lot of pretending goes wrong, their need to hate each other turns into something else entirely.
Review: I am still recovering from this book, let’s just start there. This is my first C.G Blaine book, but it will not be my last. Eden and Beck’s story was not what I expected. The cover, the blurb - it didn’t prepare me for what I was reading. And I had to force myself to slow down so I could enjoy every minute of this. I absolutely love C.G’s style of writing and I love how much effort went into Eden and Beck, as well as all the supporting characters. The attention to those details really makes a book even better than it is.
Hurt Me was the perfect summer escape, especially since the first half of the book is set in the Bahamas. We get to see both Eden and Beck’s side of the story, which also made everything that much better. I love seeing what both characters feel about the same situation and how they handle it in their heads before we see it happen to them. Here’s a quick run down of the two characters.
Eden Monroe is one of the Chicago Monroe’s. She comes from money and while her mother is mostly out of the picture, her father is still a well known and respected businessman. And her brother is also well known. Because they are that kind of famous. While she comes from money, Eden’s mission in life is to make everything a little more eco-friendly and she wants to help people. She runs fundraisers and puts her money and her fame to good use. And everyone else in her life supports her. She’s young and she’s driven.
Beck Donovan is the complete opposite. He comes from the wrong side of the tracks, he’s covered in tattoos, has a lip ring and he’s got dirty hands - but those are not what make him the wrong person for Eden. He works at a garage, fixing up cars, but at the same time, he’s going to school and also boosting cars. He’s part of a ring that steals cars, strips them and makes money off of it. Which brings Beck to the Bahamas - he’s laying low for a bit, waiting for the heat on his ass to die down before he goes back home.
Eden’s brother has terrible taste in women, one of which happens to be Beck’s cousin, who slipped him the info that Eden’s suite will be empty. So he shows up and so does she and it’s a whole lot of raging against each other. The tension is so sweet and it’s perfect. They pretend to be siblings, then they pretend to be a couple and all because her brother offers Beck a boatload of money if he can keep every other guy away from Eden. And Beck takes his job seriously, because money is money. Except, all that pretending takes a back seat and it becomes a lot more than either of them bargained for.
Guys, the chemistry between Eden and Beck is off the charts. I love how they can’t keep their hands off of each other and how every time they’re alone, they’re so desperate for each other. One night in the Bahamas leads to them suddenly being apart when they get back home. But Eden’s not going to let that one night just be a memory in her life. She tracks Beck down and they set out on this insanely hot affair. While they don’t know everything about each other, somehow that seems to work out just fine. Beck understands that they come from different worlds and Eden doesn’t care as much as he does. To her, her world is just a part of who she is.
They’re both such explosive characters and I love how they come together, butt heads and fall apart as well. It’s always so great to see the flaws and damage in characters, all the things that make them human really do make them feel more real. The supporting cast of characters are incredible. Eden’s brother is an asshole, but only because he thinks he knows what’s best for his sister. All of their friends are much better, obviously. But it’s Beck’s family that takes the cake. They’re so warm and welcoming and such a loving group of people, they feel like a warm hug on a cold night.
Everything about Hurt Me was perfect and I am so glad I got a chance to read this beautiful book. C.G. Blaine, you have a fan in me for life. I can’t wait to read more of your incredible writing!
