This book is very well written and tells the story of a rape from the point of view of 4 characters.
I did enjoy this book but found, like many of the psychological thrillers I have previously read, that this book uses a lot of description to build tension. I had already worked out what was going on from about 50% of the way through. It doesn’t detract from the book I just ended up with a bit of an anticlimax at the end as I thought there was going to be something that came completely out of left field to finish it off and there really wasn’t.
I didn’t particularly like any of the character’s either which was a shame. Privilege oozed from all of them - even the character who shouldn’t have felt like that. She ended up being a caricature of a Northern lower class, female. I know it’s hard to write about anyone you don’t have particular first hand knowledge of but actually talking to someone with that kind of background might have been a good place to start. I did find the classism particularly problematic.
Otherwise this book is an fairly ‘swift’ read and does provide an interesting base to consider issues of consent in modern society, especially in the student community where alcohol and ‘clubs’ are rife as part of university culture.
