Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech

4.0

My tour of middle school books that made me a reader continues with Chasing Redbird . I loved this book as a child. I literally read the cover off of the paperback copy I had at home. I could relate so well to Zinny's need to be heard by her big family while also yearning for space to discover herself. I was nervous to do a reread as an adult, scared that Chasing Redbird would have lost its magic.

I am relieved then, to report that this is still such a tender, readable book. I did have some issues as an adult that I did not as a child (the fact that Jake's stealing is never really addressed as being morally wrong and unacceptable is a headscratcher) but I still loved Zinny's story and found the messages about grief and loss to be as profound today as they were twenty years ago.
