I read this quickly. It was a beautiful simple style, conveying much with few words. It really made me think about the prevailing attitudes of the time and David’s father and mother’s belief in doing the right thing. Whether this was born of them viewing all people equally or because of the nature of the crimes or who the perpetrator or victim was. I wasn’t entirely convinced that a sherrif of this time would be able to retain his position for any length of time with such an absolute view on justice.
There were a few moments which took my breath away in surprise, these were all the more unexpected because I really thought I knew how this story would roll out. But the author occasionally dropped a sentence that stopped me in my tracks.
An interesting read. Like Shepparm my initial reaction was “and…”, what have I learnt here? But it’s percolating in my brain and I suspect I’ll be thinking about this book for some time.
