I've only read A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities, and this is making me consider if I should read David Copperfield now (though I should finish Huck Finn first, if I'm reading the source material of Pulitzer winning fiction novels). Demon's life is tragic but compelling, with Dickensian characters easily translating to Appalachia and the cycles of poverty that trap generations.
With retellings, I always wonder how much of this is an author riffing on a familiar story vs using it as a framework to look at something new. I do think mapping it on to oxy addiction is transformative, and I can't wait to go through any number of deep dives on parallels to the original.
