Men Have Called Her Crazy by Anna Marie Tendler
2.5

I just really wanted more from this on every level.

It's well written but brutally? I just don't think there's enough here to justify a book. These experiences all seem incredibly common. This level of mental unrest does not feel earth-shattering. This degree of privilege makes it all seem cushioned, anyway.

Hate to dunk on a memoir, and in the spirit of fairness I did think it was written pretty competently, even skilfully at times. I just - it was light. It was flimsy. There was no meat to this memoir.

I wonder if perhaps the author is just way too close to the divorce she alludes to and the residential stay she completed to have developed any real perspective on it. The whole book has the feel of a polished diary rather than a memoir and that makes it feel all a bit pointless. I needed it to be less in the moment and more of an analysis after the fact. Otherwise it's just a woman talking about frankly pretty everyday feelings and experiences and then plugging some lamps.
