Pushing the Limits
by Katie McGarry
I wasn't expecting something grand or spectacular from this book, but boy was I wrong.
Pushing the Limits has dual narrators, Echo and Noah, both seniors in high school. Echo a once lively popular girl in her school, suffered from a traumatic event only to return broken and scarred. The girl that everyone once loved and admired, isolates herself as much as possible and begins to wear long-sleeved shirts. The thing is that not even Echo can remember what happened to her and why she barely sleeps anymore, not to mention why her arms are mutilated with bumpy white scars spreading throughout. Noah has had his life completely turn upside down since losing both his parents in a fire and becoming separated from his two younger brothers. Going through a tough foster system has made him tough both on the inside and outside, where he has had to grow up fast and fight by whatever means necessary. His glory days of being on the basketball team and leading a normal life are shoved out the door, and instead he becomes known for his "bad-boy" reputation- hooking up with various girls, tattoos and smoking all in one. Two unlikely characters both beaten down and torn on the inside, come together to save each other from the hardships they are to face if they want to move on from their past and look to a new future.
I loved everything about this book, it was amazing. Katie McGarry does a wonderful job at creating this immense and beautiful storyline that is hard to read at times, but just propels you forward rooting for the characters through the good and bad times. I caught myself crying more than once and that's when I knew that beyond sheer romance and lust, this story speaks about finding that other someone with which you can count on to unconditionally be there and lift you up when you can't any longer. When Noah lost himself and began to think foolishly, Echo was there to knock sense into him and show him that following the rules isn't all that bad. When Echo couldn't see herself as more than fragile pieces scattered on the floor, Noah was there to put her back together and show her everything she had to offered.
This is a really unique, and realistic, plot line for a contemporary book. I did feel in the beginning a little of instalove, especially on Noah's side, so I was a bit reluctant at first but then everything just fell into place. If you're looking for something to melt your heart, uplift you and really suck you in (because I mean hello Noah...) then I would 100% recommend this book. It tore me up and I reeled me in where I sat up until 2AM finishing it in one sitting.
