Spider-Man: The Secret of the Sinister Six by Adam-Troy Castro

1.5

For a Spider-Man story, this book contained not nearly enough Spider-Man. It focused almost entirely on the Sinister Six, about whom I do not care, and the Gentleman who was pulling their strings. As a story about these characters, it's probably great - the Spider-Man lore is strong, and the action comes thick and fast, but I like reading about Peter Parker, Mary Jane, the Bugle, and street level crime. There's almost none of any of that in this book. What there is is Peter riding a plane through a blizzard (on the outside, of course), and a plot that has such high stakes that people are unselfconsciously talking about World War Three.

I also absolutely despised the weird Scooby Doo bit at the end. What on earth was that? Suddenly Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy are characters in this book, just for a few pages? It felt like some kind of weird in-joke between the author and a mate. Any editor worth their salt ought to have plucked that out immediately like a diseased eye. I can't even imagine it was a licensing thing, since as far as I'm aware Scooby-Doo has only ever crossed over with DC characters. Awful.
