The Darkening Age
by Catherine Nixey
Fascinatingly controversial account of the victory of Christianity over paganism in the latter years of the Roman Empire. In this very readable book many Christians come across as terrifying thugs. There is probably an opposing view to this but the author is putting an alternative account to the usual one of lack of resistance to the spread of Christianity. The horrific murder of the Alexandrian mathematician Hypatia certainly lends support to her case and some of the other practices of fanatical early Christians certainly leave one feeling slightly queasy. An intriguing read.
