I cannot begin this review without saying how enamored I am with the language. I want to share quotes but find myself wanting to insert the text whole for you to read. Outside of the clever analogies and magic of this play between poison and cure, Nell's voice is unique, delightful, and attractive. A book full of wanting: academically, romantically, sexually and ultimately not knowing what to do with all this want. I was obsessed with Nell's obsession with her mentor: she's writing journals for her but can't decide why or if she'll even read these deeply personal journals. I couldn't get enough of her brain and whenever I wasn't fully absorbed into Nell's obsessions, I was annoyed being surrounded by such unlikeable characters. But so, so riveting to be so wholly sucked into one person's life, a life that revolves around so many other lives.
