Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks by Jason Reynolds

3.0

75: Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks by Jason Reynolds, a finalist for the National Book Award in Young People's Literature (he didn't ultimately "win" but what an honor to be a finalist!).

What I enjoy about the "kids" in this book is that they are wise and mature and understand the consequences of their actions...and that they love their friends fiercely. They are all being raised by parents also doing their best to care for and provide for their kids, teach them the most important life lessons, and support them on their way to independence.

I also appreciate about Reynolds's craft the inclusion of certain elements from story to story...or block to block...threading together these kids and their lives in interesting ways.

There is something about nearly every one of these characters that the other characters, even those closest to them and possibly their best friends, don't know about them. As readers we learn their truths and can then support them...somehow...toward their honesty with themselves and ultimately others and are pleased when they reach that.

They are all, as the title reveals, neighbors of sorts, whose lives are intertwined by school, by social network, by place...all teenagers. And they're believable and valuable to meet.
