If you're into history and/or biographies then this is a must-read. I'm not the biggest fan of the genre so it says a lot that I'm giving it 5 stars. Of course a big reason for the high rating is the main character; Bonhoeffer is a gentle pastor/scholar who ultimately joins a plan to try to assassinate Hitler. What a crazy, suspenseful, God-honoring story of one man's faithfulness in the most difficult of times.

Also, be aware this is a long book. You will be aware of the book's length as you read. 544 pages. It isn't like some biographies I've read, though, where the length felt like a consequence of the author trying to provide more data than previously published biographies on the topic. Instead, this book feels consistent and like an appropriate retelling of facts. It could have been made into two books but then most people would have then skipped Bonhoeffer's upbringing and jumped straight to the war.

Anyway, good historical nonfiction read. I'm counting this as "a book that won an ECPA Christian Book Award" for 2016 #vtReadingChallenge
