Notes of a Crocodile
by Qiu Miaojin
Really beautiful book. The author has so many vivid and unexpected turns of phrase/images. Such cool use of language that made me stop and thinking. Of course I didn’t write any of them down, but here’s one from a quick flip through- “so what if these were just kids’ problems? Like hitting a patch of broken glass while biking, they could leave you fragile, and unable to speak.”
One thing I missed was any sort of introduction, context, endnotes, or translator’s notes. There were a few things I was able to pick up based on my middling knowledge of Chinese, but I don’t know much about Taiwan and am sure I was missing things. I also recently read Yan Geling’s White Snake and Other Stories, and those notes were super helpful and added so much. It’s a real loss to not have them here.
