John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
5.0

This is a wonderful collection of the first three Mars novels!

A Princess of Mars: This is the first and my favourite of the three novels in this collection. The story is wonderfully imaginative and ahead of its time with predictions about the science of the red planet. John Carter is established as a hero for the ages!

The Gods of Mars: This installment has some wonderfully forward-thinking ideas for its time. It deals with religion and race in an interesting way. The language used sometimes seems racist but I believe that's a product of the time in which it was written and not reflective of the book's thesis.

The Warlord of Mars: This novel is my least favourite of the three because it is so focused on war. It is almost wall to wall fighting! John Carter comes off as less heroic and more arrogant in this installment but the cliffhanger ending left me wanting more.
