The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle
5.0

With the backdrop of being obsessed with the Sherlock Holmes Cinematic Universe lol at one point in my life, I have never actually finished any of the Sherlock Holmes novels. This was the first one and it was because of a podcast on Spotify named “Phoebe Reads a Mystery”. Phoebe, the narrator, reads one chapter a day of public domain mystery novels. She reads many titles by ACD, Agatha Christie, and even Charlotte Brönte’s Jane Eyre. I’m so thankful I came across this podcast.

Anyway, this particular novel’s setting was really eerie and I felt that having finished reading that, I could take on any of the Sherlock Holmes installments. I recently came across this Tumblr post, too, that pointed out how ACD had been drinking the “respect women” juice and it’s reflected in his writing because it’s often easy to pinpoint the villain in the persona of men who are sketchy towards the women in his stories. I tested that theory out in this one, and it turned out right. The villain was the guy who regularly beat his wife and was on to con another woman for his greedy scheme. I love ACD for that. Lol
