Sula by Toni Morrison
5.0

I finally got around to reading Toni Morrison. I really enjoyed Sula. I was taken aback by how disturbing some parts of the story were, but not in the way that we see expect to see violence now. I think it was more disturbing to read about because the violence was written so casually, like these things that were happening weren't at all out of the ordinary. Toni Morrison's writing is really beautiful. She managed to make you care about characters you only really heard about second hand, or barely got to know at all. That is quite an accomplishment, especially in such a short book.

"Lonely, isn't it?"
"Yes, but my lonely is mine. Now your lonely is somebody else's. Made by somebody else and handed to you. Ain't that something? A secondhand lonely.”
