The second volume of 'The Summer Hikaru Died' brings some of the youthful, queer anxieties hinted at in the first volume and makes them more explicit. Nevertheless, it is a horror book, and a tangible feeling of dread casts a shadow over the story. The stakes become higher and at the same time more personal. The continual blurring of intense childhood crushes, adolescent discovery, and disgust make for a potent read.

Mokumokuren's art is again a standout. It appears deceptively simple and effortless, yet with extremely well-captured emotion and personality.

I will say the decision to translate background noises and sounds into English lettering instead of keeping the Japanese text (as has mostly been standard over the last few decades of manga publishing) has taken some getting used to for me personally, but it's probably less distracting for newer readers who expect the book to be entirely in English. It doesn't detract from the experience.
