Circe by Madeline Miller

2.0

"Weird, left-out child becomes weirder as she grow and stories about people around her (relevant and irrelevant ones) rather than herself", sums up Miller's creation.

I had hopes for this book because 1. Booktok again hyped it and fell for it, 2. Percy Jackson, 3. Greek Myths and stories but from a woman's POV, 4. Percy Jackson. Alas, Miller again strikes back with yet another disappointment and wasted potential.

Every other page, Circe screaming, "I am not like OTHER GODS, I am different, quirky, pick me!" did not do for me. Unnecessary long-ass descriptions about the most random and basic chores Circe did on the island annoyed the hell out of me. It felt like the games Idle Life Simulator and Walking Simulator but books.

My biggest issue with the book was definitely how it is "Oh, let's tell the story of the misinterpreted and misunderstood lesser Goddess/Titan" but this is what is presented to us.

The writing felt too monotonous and bland at times which made the page skimming unbearable as well.

Circe, a witch, a sorcereress, Zeus kinda fears her, but where is the witchcraft? where's the potion making or any necessary details about them? And no, chopping, boiling, plucking, growing is not witchcraft please.

I think this can be good book for people who are not used to reading, want to get into Greek Mythology but don't want to get too overwhelmed yet at the same time I wouldn't actually recommend this to anyone...
