Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder
by Caroline Fraser
medium-paced
I love learning about this period of American history, and seeing it through the lens of multiple generations of this family was fascinating! It's such a complex, mercenary, sometimes horrific time, and that comes through clearly.
This focuses on the Ingalls and Wilder families, so it only briefly touches on the treatment of Native Americans and the politics of the time, but I felt like it treated those subjects with appropriate gravitas. That said, I will be looking for more books that delve more deeply into that aspect of this period.
