novelsandnightcaps 's review for:
A Shadow Bright and Burning
by Jessica Cluess
Before reading this review (since I know the only stuff people read is the stuff above the "More" link), I think you all should know that my favorite quote from this book is on page 299, "I aggressively petted a horse."
On with the review!
I really liked the concept of this book, especially the whole Ancients vs. Sorcerers thing, as I think we all need a good dose of predictable magic once in a while. However, I think I ended up enjoying the plot more than the characters. Henrietta was okay, I guess, but the only thing I really liked about her was that she didn't have a true love interest even though it looked like there was set up for a "traditional" love triangle. (you know, two guys obsessed with one special girl). Pretty cool book, will read the sequel because I'm invested in the plot now. I did think it was interesting how Cluess meshed magic history with the actual history of England and didn't take the easy way out and set the whole thing on another planet.
