Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina

5.0

A powerful, heartbreaking story bringing attention to the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls epidemic. I was hooked from the very beginning, even though the mystery was a bit of a slow burn. I liked the way mythology was incorporated and added tension, and the stories guiding our main character along.

The time changes did take some getting used to as you flip between day 1 and day 30, etc very quickly. It took me a bit of time to get used to the rhythm and remember where we were but once I got into the groove it wasn’t as distracting for me anymore. I could see this as being a downfall for some though as you get information in the future days that make it harder to read the past days- like whether you can trust a character or not. It gives you that “screaming at the character not to go in there” vibes.

I thought the familial relationships as Anna navigated her own feelings were well done and the way they came together in their search for Grace. The racism by the police was tough to read but brings important light to that issue as well, how quickly they turned on the girls was infuriating.

I devoured this story in one sitting and definitely recommend it. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for Medina’s next works!
