The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

3.0

Where do I begin with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo? While the story surrounding Evelyn Hugo and her many husbands is of interest, the main plot of her being a Bisexual Woman is the main focus. Or so it was supposed to be. The bisexual representation within the book could have been a bit more. I found that while reading Evelyn’s story was good for being set in the 20th century. However, I didn’t like that Evelyn had to basically dumb her heritage down and who she is as a Latina woman because otherwise she’d be ostracized. I loved how sassy and real she was with her words during some parts, but I also think Monique could have had more of a story line. Like I know the story is about Evelyn, but I think Monique should have had more of a story line. I do like how she fought for Bisexual Representation, however, Reid does fall into the trap as some do where they kill the 2SLGBTQ+ character(s). It was unsettling to say the least. One thing to highlight is the way that Evelyn doesn’t truly take accountability for any of her actions, and if she doesn’t, it’s for Celia; which I guess is because she loves her, but even so. Even at the end, after she tells Monique about her father, and the way that she ends her life, it just seemed like a cop out. I wish there was just better representation all around.
