The beginning of this book was hard to get through. I ended up taking a break and coming back to the story, which probably didn't help. The books I read during my break were quite good and highlighted some major annoyances in this book. First, I paused reading initially, because the story just wasn't moving quick enough. A lot of mysteries and conflicts were set up in the first book of the series, and by the beginning of book 4, it still feels like the authors are leading me around in circles. Sure some development and revelations have occurred, but there wasn't enough to hold my interest. The ending of the last book blew the door wide open for opportunities to find out more stuff in this book, but no it was same old mysteries. To further compound the issue it felt like the plot was starting all over again when the main characters are all sent back to a new school. I can tell the authors are going somewhere with this twist, but it on top of the lack of progress in the main mystery of Willa and her origins/powers, I was just tired of it. It felt like I would've been better off re-reading the first book. The only reveals that have happened thus far are who the Abcurses are and what their story is. That was tied up in book 2. Lots more has happened to add more questions, but not more answers.
The big reveal for who/what Willa is, seems obvious to me, though I could be wrong. I can't pretend that I'm really sure how this series is going to end, so I think there would be entertainment if I were to continue to read, but I'm a bit hesitant to commit to that. The ending to this book was good, and left me wanting to know what happened next, but I've been in this boat before, and spent half the next book aggravated. I don't know if I'm ready for that to happen again.
