It's pretty much impossible not to compare this to The Mortal Instruments. The pacing of this felt a lot more natural than Clare's first series, and I'm glad that she managed to make these characters sufficiently unique. Tessa in particular is much more compelling to me than Clary is. The plot twists weren't as devastating as the previous ones, but I actually think that's an improvement because there was proper foreshadowing.

Clare properly executed the world in terms of time period in connection with the slightly steam-punk twist, though I wish she had leaned a bit more into the propriety of the time period. The love triangle seems well-balanced in terms of the love interests, though I wish there hadn't been quite so much romantic development in this particular installment. I'm still very excited to see where it goes.

This is a great contrast of a story to read along with the second half of The Mortal Instruments, so I'm excited to get back into it after reading City of Fallen Angels.
