Date Tech and Karasuno's practice match is great, with Karasuno trying little little new things and flailing a bit but figuring things out as well. Tsukishima's excellent analysis skill, Kageyama learning to push and read his teammates, Date Tech finding things that work and things that need work, all of it was amazing. Kageyama and Koganegawa talking was so funny, but also cute. Kinoshita was seen in action for the first time, and that was surprisingly satisfying.

Hinata and his little sister were extremely adorable, and so were the January 1st shrine visit of 3rd years, Ikejiri running into Sawamura and Sawamura's bad dream of being the only one in the VBC. All of this adds to the richness of the lives of these characters.

On January 4th, the team departs for Tokyo. On reaching, they are shown a video made by Takinoue for cheering them up, showing the best plays by each player on the team. The next day is Day 1 of the tournament, and Nekoma and Fukurodani are seen, so are Komori and Sakusa.

After opening ceremony, the team gets to warm up and practice in a nearby gym, and returning to the event, Hinata's bag gets exchanged, and Kiyoko Shimizu, ex-hurdler, is the one who gets it back. It was fantastic to see some actual development for Shimizu.

The first round opponent for Karasuno is Tsubakihara Academy, their second time at nationals, which is also a second straight appearance for them. And apparently, it's Karasuno's first appearance in 5 years, which means that's when the little giant played at Karasuno, and it's their 9th appearance overall!!! I didn't know that Karasuno had been at nationals that many times.

Coach Ukai has gained some insight from his senpai who is a coach to a team that has been to nationals, and he advises the team to warm up more than usual to adjust to the non-wood floors and also the extremely high and wide space of the gym. Though the whole team is a little nervous and disoriented, it's Kageyama's game that is most affected by the different spatial arrangement. Tsuba takes a 3-0 lead from the mistakes that Karasuno makes, and that's where this volume wraps up.

Completely in love with Shimizu, Aone and the Date Tech senior trio. The Shimizu full page arts, enchanting. I loved it.
