Our Darkest Night: A Novel of Italy and the Second World War by Jennifer Robson

1.0

I barely ever read popular books, but this was for a book club so I powered through. It was a good reminder to me to not pick up anymore popular modern books. From the first page I noticed that the writing was awful. (Especially after [a:Elizabeth Musser|187026|Elizabeth Musser|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1638220124p2/187026.jpg] fabulous writing.)
The descriptions were so over-the-top and cliche. The hero was literally the stereotypical perfect man. The heroine never did anything wrong.
Although the epilogue states that this author did a lot of research for this book, the writing makes it feel like she doesn't know what she's talking about. Like the fact that the Jew's and the Catholic's only hope is to just "bear through it." Yes, they don't have the true hope of the Gospel, but it seems like they would say something a little more substantial than "you'll get over it."
You get halfway through the book and boom- ridiculous bad language. One closed door scene. The story was pretty boring except for a few major drastic things that happen. 100% would don't recommend.
