They Called Us Enemy by Justin Eisinger, Steven Scott, George Takei

5.0

“That remains part of the problem—that we don't know the unpleasant aspects of American history."

This graphic novel is not only beautifully drawn, it is hauntingly well written, and never more a more relevant read. In 2020, an election year, this message is so, so important. It is not the time to forget what horrible things have happened in our national history, recent or long gone.

The writers and artists have created something wonderfully eloquent that makes you want to read more and more, both of this account and about the trials and tribulations of Japanese Americans in the 1940s. It covers not only history and politics, but a classic coming of age tale when you're surrounded by prejudice as a child for something you can't control.

Whether or not you're a fan of graphic novels, you should make an exception for They Called Us Enemy. It's stunning on all ends.
