 Kitty’s narrative is the best part of the book and unfortunately takes too much time to get to. The present day scenes take up too much of the book in my opinion. While the experiences of Kitty and her friends create a nuanced conversation regarding race, the present day characters are under developed and lack the nuance that made Kitty's storyline so interesting. The Kitty Karr plot is a 5/5 for me, but the present day St. John family doesn’t work.
