The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America by Thomas King

5.0

I love history, but I don't love trying to read history books. This book doesn't read like a dusty old tome. King takes a difficult history spanning hundreds of years and turns it into something of a page-turner with his style and humor and sarcasm. An excellent non-fiction book that is almost as immersive as fiction.

This is exactly what I was looking for and more. I wanted to learn about the history of the First Nations in Canada, and this book took me on a journey through time and across North America and introduced me to some key people and times and treaties and legislation. At the same time, it didn't just dwell on the past, on the historical bits and pieces that you find everywhere, the "Dead Indian" as King calls it in his book. Instead he provides an account that helps the readers understand the lives and struggles of First Nations people today. A must read.
