I'm continuing my read of Ann Patchett's backlist and I'm down to my last couple of her books. I didn't know much about Run going into it and it was okay. Certainly in the bottom half of her books for me. This is her second book I've read that deals somewhat with race relations and I'm just not sure if she's the one to be writing these. This book is about a former mayor of Boston who had a biological son with his wife, and they decided to adopt, and adopted a black boy, and then the boy's birth mother also asked them to take his slightly older brother which they accepted. Little is touched on the black sons' experiences living in a white family. Early on in the book (so I'm not spoiling much), their birth mother reinserts herself into their lives, with unrealistic outcomes. I wish Patchett had been able to delve more into the two sons' psyches some more, as they were quite different, and also would have liked to get more of a backstory on their relationship with their brother. The writing itself wasn't bad, but I do not think the story was one for Patchett to tell.
