Before They Are Hanged
by Joe Abercrombie
I am amazed by Abercrombie's ability to do this much world building and character progression in less than a 1000 pages. I completely don't agree with anyone who is saying that the characters are unlikable, this book shows you how much they've changed, what they're thinking about themselves and about one another. Every character in this book is amazing.
Mild spoilers ahead, I absolutely loved Glokta in this book, he kept talking about how much of a monster he really is, how he doesn't care and is just waiting for his death, and then we find out he is in fact a good man turned monster due to his circumstances, Luthar goes from this obnoxious brat to an actual human being, Ferro turns from a distant and cold creature who only cares about vengeance to a warmer personality who questions her own life.
This book is made by it's characters, I particularly loved one character telling captain West "You're too angry for me". This was to me something that delves into human psychology, a man who has been abused turns into this respectable officer, the good guy, the hero but in the end, he is what he is, an angry man that's tucked away from the eyes of the public.
Basically what I'm saying here is this, the characters you hate become the ones you love and vise versa.
I have to wait 2 more weeks for the last book to arrive, I can't wait.
